A personal message from Sylvia,
Founder of Rock the Cradle

Congrats on creating a mini-you! I remember the immediate thought that came into my mind after I saw that second pink line for the first time: How will I do this? I knew I wanted a positive birthing experience, but had no clue where to start.

My husband may have studied engineering. But dealing with female mechanics? Not so much. So I decided to hire a doula for additional support. And it was such a game-changer for us that I never gave birth again without one.

Here’s what I know as someone who has attended over 175 births and had three of her own: The way a woman gives birth can have a lasting impact on the birth story she shares, how her body heals, how close she feels to her partner during and after the birthing experience, and even the bond she forms with her new baby.

Full disclosure—it still took blood, sweat and tears. But giving birth wasn’t the screamfest I imagined it would be (thanks for that, Hollywood). I was grounded in the moment. I walked around like an Amazon queen for days. And all because an amazing birth squad had my back…and I was encouraged to give birth my way, in my own time.

This is why I founded Rock the Cradle. So more couples can get the knowledgeable, loving and non-judgmental support they need to prepare for the positive birth experience they want.

I know that working with a doula is a highly personal choice. Our free birth consultations help us match you to a doula who fits your personality, your birthing preferences and philosophies, and your interest in any specialty services we offer like hypnobirthing or aromatherapy.

But beyond the right qualifications, if you’re going to have someone all up in your business (literally!), it’s important to find a doula you feel comfortable with. Someone you can trust during—let’s be real—a very vulnerable time.

That’s why we facilitate face-to-face meet and greets with your potential doula before you embark on that relationship. Because it really is all about the chemistry.

The first step? Check out our doula roster below or come to one of our monthly Open Houses. See who you connect with. And when you’re ready to learn more about your options, call me and I’ll connect you with the doula that’s right for you!

Let’s rock your birth,

Certified Montreal Birth & Postpartum Doula,

RTC Doula Mika Rock

Certified Holistic Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula, Certified Hypnobirthing Instructor, Childbirth Educator, Certified Yoga Teacher specializing in women’s health and wellness, Certified Shiatsu therapist and a Member of the Academy of Naturopaths and Naturotherapists of Canada

My roots go back to a home where my father is a scientist, and my mother is a psychotherapist and pioneering holistic therapist. She used to press on my feet, to help me heal, with reflexology. This was in the early ’80s. In our home, discussions about scientific versus holistic ways of thinking were regular conversations at the dinner table. Over the years, I gained hands-on experience in both worlds, finding the places where they are complementary.

I have been passionate about birth and parenting for many years. My work in supporting women and families goes back to 2002, in particular with my role as a postpartum doula. I joined families with newborn twins, accompanying them over the first few months, acting as helping hands, offering the support needed for a positive and nurtured transition into the adventure of parenting twins. My growing interest in supporting a family’s wellness led me on the path of studying and working in education for 10 years. I worked as a Home Room teacher, a mentor, and a science teacher for young people ranging in ages from 18 months to 18 years old.

In the last decade working as a Certified Yoga teacher, I have helped support a wide range of clients with many different challenges related to pelvic floor health, fertility issues, menstrual health, menopause, fatigue, migraines, and more.

My personal experience being accompanied by a Doula was a very positive one. My Doula’s presence and support were invaluable and meaningful for both me and my husband. Our Birth Doula helped us experience a smoother transition into our new role as parents. I came to value how much of a difference having such loving and knowledgeable support can make to a healthy pregnancy, while labouring, and when becoming new parents. I believe these are all-powerful and vulnerable times, where the right support can set a foundation of wellness within the family, for years to come.

I integrate visualization, embodiment, meditation, yoga philosophy, postures and breathing techniques, pressure points, Zen shiatsu, homeopathy, into pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.

As part of your birth team, I will help you remember to listen to your intuition, trust your body, and, when needed, offer you evidence-based information so that you may navigate this journey with confidence.

“Mika was our doula this past June 2018. I can’t imagine how we would have done it without her! Mika Rock was a calm, knowledgeable, and nonjudgemental support throughout the pregnancy and birth. She was a great teammate to my partner during the late-night labour. When my labour quickly accelerated, she knew just when to get the medical team into the room. Having a doula during such a major physical and emotional transition is a great way to set yourself up for a healthy and positive birth and postpartum experience. Thank you, Mika!” – Jill W.

MEET Elya Cohen, OUR heart-centred doula

Certified Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, Dancing for Birth Instructor, Certified HypnoBirthing Instructor, Childbirth Educator a Member of the Academy of Naturopaths and Naturotherapists of Canada

My way to becoming a doula began when my sister learned she was pregnant with her first child. We were both thrilled and terrified by the news. She was overcome with joy but at the same time feared the challenges, both physical and emotional that would take place over the next nine months.

I have since assisted my sister with the birth of her three kids and went through my own countless unsuccessful natural attempts to conceive, five unsuccessful IVF fertility procedures and at last a successful twin pregnancy.

Soon enough, I came to realize the direct link between the support, coaching, and accompaniment during the pregnancy and a positive birthing experience.

These experiences only confirmed what I knew was my calling – the true desire to support expectant mothers and their partners through this extraordinary, unparalleled, miraculous journey.

Today, as a certified Birth and Postpartum Doula and a Childbirth Educator, I accompany birthing families at hospitals, birthing centres and at home. I provide my services to expectant parents from near and far.

I coupled experience with education in this field, honed my skills readying me to accompany you on this amazing journey culminating with the best birthing experience possible for you and those in your life sharing this miracle about to happen.

Some people might have a very romantic notion of how birth is supposed to happen, and that “our body was meant to do this”, which in fact it is. As your Doula, my responsibility is to prepare you for the whole spectrum of what labor can actually be and provide you with the tools to make sure your needs are met.

And, not leaving anything to chance, I have partnered with a team of experienced doulas who share the same values philosophy, and availability and can transition seamlessly should the need arise.

“Every birthing woman and her partner should have a doula!!!

We were incredibly lucky to find Elya, who after our first meeting felt like we had known for years. Elya’s calm and friendly presence, as well as her endless advice, helped both my husband and I prepare for and trust the birthing process.

Elya talked us through our birthing worries, fears, and any pre-conceived notions that we had about birth. Providing some fantastic resources and extra research. She also helped me understand that I have a choice in my birthing process and the decisions that were being made about my care. This allowed me to ask more questions, make informed decisions, and feel completely comfortable with what was happening both prior to and during labour.

Having Elya as our doula was the BEST decision we made around our birth and pregnancy. We are incredibly grateful to her for helping us have the birth that we truly wanted. – Neta R

Registered Nurse Clinician, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, DONA Certified Birth Doula, Childbirth Educator

As a nurse clinician, lactation consultant, and doula, I have the advantage of seeing pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding from many different perspectives.

People often ask me in which role I started my professional journey. My first love is nursing. As I was finishing nursing school, I knew that I wanted to work in the birthing unit where, as a student, I had witnessed the power of birth and the indescribable moment when parents look into their baby’s eyes for the first time. To provide the best quality holistic care to these families, I wanted to add to my labour support skillset. Little did I know at the time, attending the DONA International birth doula training would lead me to become a fully certified doula who would have the privilege of accompanying many amazing families as they began or continued their parenting journeys. I have since been a passionate doula advocate and am pursuing a master’s degree in nursing with the focus of my research being the collaboration between nurses and doulas in the hospital setting.

I love new challenges and expanding my skills to better support families. To add to my repertoire and help families with more complex breastfeeding challenges, I have become an International board-certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

I see breastfeeding as both a natural and a learned skill. It’s normal to have lots of questions! Just like every birth is unique, every breastfeeding journey is unique. I integrate my knowledge as a nurse, a doula, and a lactation consultant to provide you with evidence-based information and individualized recommendations, as well as skilled support based on advanced training and professional experience, all while promoting a holistic, non-judgmental environment where your choices are always valued.

  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

  • Member of the Canadian Association of Perinatal and Women’s Health Nurses (CAPWHN)
  • DONA Certified Birth Doula

‘After several interviews with other doulas and wondering if we wanted one at all, my partner and I met Gabriela. We immediately changed our minds and signed up. And I am so very glad we did!

Because this was my first pregnancy and I am relatively new to Montreal, navigating Quebec’s healthcare system as well as preparing for delivery was sometimes a challenging process. Gabriela made everything easier and less scary. She was extremely reliable. She was also incredibly knowledgeable – as a nurse, she could explain the medical side of things very clearly. What I appreciated most was her willingness and eagerness to do research and fact-check answers to any and all questions.

At the birth itself, Gabriela provided an incredibly calming presence, working with me and my partner to help in whatever way we needed. And as a postpartum doula, she provided follow-up AND cooked us delicious food. I could not have wished for a more supportive, kind, fun presence through this amazing and at times terrifying process that is birth. I will definitely have Gabriela as my doula if I have a second child and cannot recommend her highly enough to others looking for an evidence-based, non-judgemental doula.’ – Poulami R.

Certified Yoga Therapist & Teacher, Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant, Childbirth Educator, Certified Postpartum Doula

My doula journey began after having my first-born in hospital. I didn’t realize then how important it was to have someone other than my husband present in the birth room. A woman, a doula. Someone who had been there, done it, and could assure me that everything was okay. I wanted to be that support for future mothers and also support their partners through this exciting adventure.

Two years later, wanting a different birth experience, I had a blissful home birth surrounded by two doulas, two midwives, my husband and my sweet toddler.

Reminding me of the impermanence of everything, by month three of my son’s life, I was an exhausted, tandem-breastfeeding mama who was diagnosed with postpartum depression and anxiety. That’s when I discovered that having support during that postnatal period was crucial. While I adore teaching prenatal yoga, I consider some of my most important work to be during the first few days, weeks and months post birth.

I help empower couples to take charge of their pregnancy and birth, so they can have the positive birth experience they want. I incorporate meditation, visualization, yoga philosophy, postures and breathing techniques into pregnancy, birth and parenthood. Ayurveda, yoga’s sister-science, is also an important tool in helping parents better understand their whole selves and their children. I believe even just a little experience with these things can help us to cope with the challenges along the way and find joy in these special and fleeting moments.

“Jenny has helped me immensely and I recommend her therapeutic yoga services with great enthusiasm! I came to her with a back problem made worse by diastasis recti problem that re-emerged 17 years after giving birth when I tripped and fell all wrong (true story and yes, ugh!). With Jenny guiding me on special breathing and other techniques, my pain levels started to descend in just a few weeks, and I’m confident that with her help, I’ll keep improving and eventually be comfortable enough to dance salsa with vigour! Thank you so much, Jenny!” – Shelley Kath

Certified Laval Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula and Member of the Association of Naturotherapists of Quebec

I remember growing up in a small Middle Eastern town and watching my mother calm, reassure, and lend strength to women during the birthing process. I can picture the sweat on her brow, the reassuring smile on her face. As a midwife, she was an emotional anchor for the women in our community.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. And I think it takes a village to birth one, too. After the challenging birth of my first child where I felt alone and scared, I gave birth to my following three children at the birthing centre with the support of wonderful midwives. These positive birth experiences inspired me to train as a doula, so I could create the same sense of community for other women giving birth. Since then I’ve shared my passion for birth with many, including underprivileged families, refugee women, and young teens.

As a mother of four who has now attended over 200 births, I know all the ins and outs of birthing centres and hospital settings and procedures. And I believe that honest advice, realistic expectations, and nonjudgmental support are essential to birthing without fear.

I love using holistic tools, such aromatherapy, homeopathy, massage, acupressure, positions, visualizations, affirmations and more, to help you ride the waves of labour with more ease and energy, so you can rise above any discomfort and feel powerful giving birth.

“I am so grateful that Ayda was part of the journey of my first pregnancy. I felt an immediate connection the first time I met her, and after our first discussion I knew she understood me, my husband, and our vision of our ideal birth. During the pregnancy, she gave me so many precious tools to be as ready as I could be for labour and delivery. I loved that she was totally real, she prepared me and helped me not to avoid the pain but to surrender to it, to welcome it and be empowered by it, as it is what helps bring baby into this world. When the day arrived, I felt she she was an angel by my side. I listened to every word she calmly said by my ear during labour and delivery, and I know that thanks to her cues and my mental preparation, I was blessed with a beautiful, completely natural, empowering birth. I am forever grateful for her help and really think every woman should have a doula to accompany them in the amazing adventure of giving life.” – Dr. Caroline Cardona
